Take The High Road star Gwyneth Guthrie has died at the age of 84.

The actress, who portrayed Mrs Mary Mack in the soap, died on Tuesday.

Her family said in a statement: ‘It is with a heavy heart we announce the passing of our amazing mum, Gwyneth Guthrie.

‘She passed peacefully on Tuesday November 9, at home and surrounded by her loving family.

‘She will be playing to her next audience in heaven.’

Take The High Road was a Scottish serial drama set in the fictional village of Glendarroch – but filmed in Luss on the banks of Loch Lomond.

It commenced in 1980, and ran for 23 years.

Gwyneth made her debut as Mrs Mack in 1983, and would go on to play the part for 20 years. Mrs Mack would ultimately become one of the genre’s most memorable characters.

Bobby Hain, Managing director of broadcast at STV – which aired Take The High Road – paid tribute to the soap star.

‘We at STV are so saddened to hear the news about Gwyneth Guthrie,’ he said.

‘For 20 years, Gwyneth played the iconic character of Mrs Mack in Take the High Road, bringing her own wonderful comic timing and dramatic flair which made her beloved across the UK.’

After Take The High Road concluded in 2003, Gwyneth guest-starred in multiple other series, including Taggart, Doctor Finlay and Felix Tiger.

STV streamed classic episodes of Take The High Road online during the first national lockdown last year, starting from the very beginning.

Gwyneth told the Daily Record at the time that she was happy the serial drama had been made available to view once more.

‘“It’s an honour that it’s back on’, she said. ‘It’s lovely that people enjoy it so much. I’m so pleased, it means it’s got a longer life than I realised and does our country no harm.’
